Lakshmi was the daughter of the sage Bhrigu and took refuge in the ocean of milk when the gods were sent into exile. Lakshmi was reborn during the Churning of the Ocean. As soon as the gods saw Lakshmi, they all fell in love with her beauty. Shiva claimed Lakshmi as his wife, but since he had already taken the Moon, her hand was given to Vishnu, whom Lakshmi herself preferred.

Lakshmi is the goddess of light, beauty, good fortune and wealth. While Laxmi is generally worshiped to achieve success, she does not reside long with anyone who is lazy or desire her only as wealth.

Steps of Lakshmi Pooja
Spread a new cloth on a raised platform: Place a handful of grains in the center and, on this, place a kalash (pitcher) made of gold, silver, copper, or terracotta. Fill three-fourth of the kalash with water and place a betel nut, a flower, a coin, and some rice grains in it. Arrange five kinds of leaves or mango leaves in the kalash . Place a small dish on the kalash and fill it with rice grains. Draw a lotus with turmeric powder ( haldi ) over the rice grains and place the idol of goddess Lakshmi over it, along with coins.

Place the idol of Ganesha: In front of the kalash, on the right (South-West direction), place the idol of Ganesha. Also place ink and books related to your business or occupation on the platform. Light a lamp and begin the puja by offering haldi, kumkum, and flowers to the platform on which the kalash is placed. Then offer haldi, kumkum, and flowers to the water that is to be used for the puja. Invoke the river goddesses to be part of this water.

Invoke goddess: Lakshmi by reciting the Vedic mantras addressed to her. One can also recite the mantras mentioned in the Puranas or simply take some flowers in your hands, close your eyes, and think of goddess Lakshmi being showered with gold coins by two elephants standing on either side of Her and chant Her name. Then offer the flowers to the idol.

Place the idol of Lakshmi: Place the idol of Lakshmi in a plate and bathe it with water, panchamrit (a mixture of milk, curd, ghee or clarified butter, honey, and sugar) and then with water containing some gold ornament or a pearl. Wipe the idol clean and place it back on the kalash. Alternately, you can just sprinkle water and panchamrit on the idol with a flower.

Offerings: Offer sandal paste, saffron paste, perfume ( itr ), haldi, kumkum, abeer, and gulal to the goddess. Offer a garland of cotton beads to the goddess. Offer flowers, especially the marigold flowers and leaves of Bel (wood apple tree). Light an incense stick and dhoop. Make an offering of sweets, coconut, fruits, and tambul. Make an offering of puffed rice and batasha. Pour some puffed rice, batasha, coriander seeds, and cumin seeds over the idol. Safe where you keep money and jewelry; Worship this safe as a symbol of Lord Kuber.

Aarti: Finally, perform the aarti for goddess Lakshmi. Always remember that She abhors loud noise. So the aarti should be accompanied only by a small bell. Do not clap hands, as is the practice when performing aarti for other gods. A peaceful and sublime atmosphere should prevail during the pujan. Do not light crackers while the puja is on or immediately after it.

Significance of Rudraksha

A rudraksha is the seed of the Eliocarpus ganitrus tree and plays an important role in a spiritual seeker’s life. Sadhguru looks at the various types of these beads and their benefits, including the panchmukhi and ek mukhi.

Sadhguru: Rudraksha is the seed of a particular tree species which usually grows at a certain altitude in the mountains – mainly in the Himalayan region. Unfortunately, most of these trees were used to make railway sleepers, so there are very few of them remaining in India. Today, they are mostly found in Nepal, Burma, Thailand or Indonesia. They are there in some parts of the Western Ghats in South India, but the best quality ones come from a certain altitude in Himalayas because somehow the soil, atmosphere, and everything influences it. These seeds have a very unique vibration. Usually, the big beads are not so vibrant. The smaller the bead the more vibrant it is.

Malas

Usually the beads are strung together as a mala. Traditionally, they believe the number of beads is 108 plus one. The extra bead is the bindu. There must always be a bindu to the mala, otherwise the energy becomes cyclical and people who are sensitive may become dizzy.

When you string them, it is best that they are strung with either a silk thread or a cotton thread. If you wear it with a thread then it is good to take care to change the thread every six months. Otherwise one day the thread may snap and your 108 beads will go all over the place. If you want to use copper, silver or gold also it is fine, but what happens most of the time is, you take it to the jeweler to do it. When the jeweler ties a knot with a gold wire or whatever, usually they tie it too tight and close and the inside of the rudraksha cracks. I have seen, despite telling people to tell the jeweler, when they bring it back to me after getting it done, about 30-40% of the time it is broken. It is very important that you make sure it is loose. It should not be tightened too close, because if the inside crumbles with the pressure, it is no good.

The mala can be worn all the time. You can even wear it when you shower. If you take cold water baths and are not using any chemical soap, it is especially good for the water to flow over it and upon your body. But if you are using chemical soaps and warm water, it becomes brittle and will crack after sometime, so it is best to avoid wearing it at such times.

Benefits

For someone who is constantly on the move and who eats and sleeps in various places, rudraksha is a very good support because it creates a cocoon of your own energy. You might have noticed that when you go to a new place, sometimes you can fall asleep easily, whereas in certain other places you cannot fall asleep even if you are physically tired. This is because, if the situation around you is not conducive to your kind of energy, it will not let you settle down. For sadhus and sanyasis, places and situations could trouble them because they were constantly moving. One of the rules for them was never to put their head down in the same place twice. Today, once again, people have started eating and sleeping in different places because of their business or profession, so a rudraksha can be helpful.

Another thing is, sadhus or sanyasis living in the forest cannot drink water from just any pool because many times in nature, the water may be poisoned or contaminated with certain gases. If they were to drink it, it might cripple or even kill them. If a rudraksha is held above the water, if the water is good and drinkable, it will go clockwise. If it is poisoned, it will go anticlockwise. It is also a way of checking the quality of food. If you hold it above any positive pranic substance, it will move in a clockwise direction. If you hold it over any negative pranic substance, it will move in anti-clockwise direction.

A shield against negative energies

It is also a kind of shield against negative energies. It is possible for some people to use negative energies to cause harm to someone else. This is a whole science by itself. One Veda, the Atharvana Veda, is all about how to use energies to your advantage and to someone else’s detriment. If somebody who has mastery over this wants to use it, so many things – extreme suffering and even death can be caused.

A rudraksha is a kind of shield against this. You may think nobody will do negative things to you, but it is not necessary that it should be targeted at you. Let us say somebody did it to the person sitting next you, but he is not receptive to it. Now you may get it because you are sitting next to him. It is just like when two people are shooting at each other on the street, they do not intend to shoot you, but you may get shot. Similarly these things also can happen. It is not intended for you, but it can happen if you are in the wrong place at the wrong moment. There need not be a huge fear about such things, but a mala is a kind of protection from that.

Ek mukhi, panchmukhi and more

The number of faces a bead can have varies from a single face up to 21 faces. They are used for different purposes, so it would be improper to just buy something in the shop and put it on the body. Wearing the wrong type could disturb one’s life. A lot of people want to wear an ek mukhi, which has only one face because it is very powerful. You yourself have many faces. When you have many faces, if you wear an ek mukhi, you are asking for trouble.

People say if you wear an ek mukhi, you will leave your family within twelve days. Whether you leave the family or not is not the issue, it is just that it will make your energies in such a way that you will want to be alone. It doesn’t make you compatible to be with other people. If you have to wear other kinds of special beads, it is best that it is received from someone who knows these things, not just buying from the shop and putting it on your system.

It lowers your blood pressure, calms your nerves and brings a certain calmness and alertness in your nervous system. Children below 12 years of age can wear six-faced beads. It will help them calm down and be more focused. Above all they will receive the right type of attention from the adult.

The Gauri-Shankar is a certain kind which brings balance between your Ida and Pingala. Generally, people believe it will bring them prosperity. Prosperity need not necessarily mean just money. It can come in so many ways. You may not own anything but still you can be prosperous in your life. If you are a balanced person and you function sensibly in your life, prosperity may come. It happens when energies function well. A Gauri-Shankar balances and activates your Ida and Pingala.

If you want to be a brahmachari or a sanyasi, it is energized in a completely different way. People in family situations should not wear something energized in a certain way.

Genuine malas

Traditionally, rudraksha were always dealt with by people who held it as a sacred duty in their lives. For generations, they did only this. They also made their living out of it, but fundamentally it was like a sacred duty of offering it to people. But once the demand became too much, commerce came in. Today in India, there is another seed called badraksh which is a poisonous seed, which grows extensively in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and that area. To look at, both these seeds look the same. You cannot make out the difference. Only if you take it in your hand and if you are sensitive, you will know the difference. This should not be worn on the body, but these are being sold as authentic beads in many places. So it is important that you get your mala from a trusted source.

What is Sade Satti?

Sade Satti is a very dreadful word for the common masses. When, Saturn transits through the 12th, 1st, and 2nd house from the natal moon (where one's Moon is placed in the birth chart), this is termed Sade satti. Saturn takes 2.5 years to pass through each sign (30 years to make one round of the zodiac), its passing through 3 signs make it 7.5 years. Sade means "half" and Satti translates to "seven" and hence the name Sade Satti. There is a general belief that Sade Satti period brings dissatisfaction, disappointments, depression, differences, disputes, disharmony and undesirable results ,but actually this is not the case. Saturn does not always behave this way and it really depends on individual's chart. For example if Saturn is acting as a yoga karaka, there is no way it can cause all that problems in native's life. Most of the people go through 2-3 periods of Sade Satti in their life time, 4 periods are very rare. It reappears after every 25 years from when it first finished.

Sade Satti Influence

While it is true that during this 7-1/2 years Saturn transit period people do experience some tensions and troubles, it is nothing to be scared about. Even while giving some troubles and tensions, it does not deny you success. As a matter of fact a number of people prosper to new heights during this period. Sade satti is about doing one's obligatory duties without considering likes and dislikes. One who does this forever is least effected by Sade Satti and in fact gains during this period. Three Cycles of Sade Satti

First cycle of Sade-sati generally affects close relatives more than the native. The 2nd cycle influences the domestic front as well as the business front, and the 3rd cycle affects children, family, health, and physical suffering or may even indicate the death of the native. However before coming to any conclusion an astrologer must the following things.

•  Is Saturn acting as a functional benefic or malefic in the natal chart?
• Is Saturn coming under aspect of any naturally benefic/malefic planets.
• What is the Dasa/bhukti running during that time? Is Saturn involved there?
• Is the transit of Saturn under Vedha from Jupiter?
• What is the nature of Nakshatra under which Saturn falls in natal chart?
• How strong is the Natal chart. E.g. how many benefic planets in kona and Kendras, How well placed is Lagna and Lagna lord etc..
• What's the influence of Lagna on Saturn? E.g. is Saturn in Lagna or is it in conjunction with Lagna lord.

·         As you can see the results will really vary chart to chart. If someone is having all the -ve factor in the chart as explained above then his time will be very bad, but if someone has most of the factors as +ve, then Saturn will end up giving very good results. Keep this in mind while studying the bad effect explained below.

First Cycle

In the first cycle, when Saturn transits 12th house from moon for 2.5 years, the evil results are felt more by the parents and near relations of the native than the native himself. There could be some eye related problems to people who abuse this wonderful gift e.g. watching too much TV by sitting close to it. Saturn from this position throws its 3rd aspect on the 2nd house, which may affect the financial position of the native by increasing the wasteful expenditure. Because of 7th aspect on 6th house it can cause some debt. And finally because of 10th aspect on 9th house, it can bring down the general fortune of the native and can also cause setbacks to the father of native.

Second Cycle

During the Second Cycle when Saturn transits first house from moon for 2.5 years, it affects the native himself in domestic (7th aspect on 7th house and professional fields(10th aspect on 10th house). Being in the fist house it denotes ill health for the native. It can result in Weak finances, many miseries, loss of health, separation from family, loss of friends, increase in unnecessary expenditure, failure in undertakings, humiliation, loss of self confidence and self respect. One must keep in mind that these results can occur only when Saturn is acting as a pure malefic in the native's chart as explained above. Remedies should not be applied without taking into consideration how exactly the Sade Satti is going to affect you. If Saturn is trying to correct some of the wrong doings of your life e.g. trying to make you work very hard by creating obstacles, then it should probably be left untouched as its doing it for your own betterment. However if you feel that your life is really going through hell, you must consult a competent astrologer before applying any remedy. Some scholars are of the opinion that it is the astronomy which is given in वेद not the astrology. The entire knowledge is given in वेद and astrology is one of the parts of that knowledge. The संस्कृत term ज्योतिष includes both astronomy as well as astrology. ज्योतिष is one of the 6 limbs of वेद and it is accepted in वेद as eyes of वेद. Modern scholars accept the existence of astronomy in वेद but not astrology. In संस्कृत the astronomy is known asगणित ज्योतिष and astrology as फलित ज्योतिष.

This is very hard to believe the non existence of astrology in वेद. When it is said that ज्योतिष is the eyes of वेद then it clearly indicates astronomy as well as astrology. The following मंत्र is given in वेद clearly explains the entire astrological networking: -

ॐ चत्वारि श्रृङ्गा त्रयो अस्य पादा, द्वे शीर्षे सप्त हस्तासो अस्य ।

त्रिधा बद्धो वृषभो रोरवीति, महो देवो मर्त्या ग्वं २ आविवेश ॥

The meaning of above मंत्र is an amazing bull that fulfills every desires & making shout, having four horns, three legs, two heads, seven hands is bounded to three places and this महादेव is entering the mortals.

The above मंत्र and its meaning, indicate a code which should be decoded to arrive at a clear meaning. The following is will be the meaning after decoding: -

चत्वारि श्रृङ्गा : - (1) धर्म, (2) अर्थ, (3) काम, (4) मोक्ष. These four types of पुरुषार्थ are the four horns.

त्रयो अस्य पादा : - (1) भूतकाल, (2) वर्त्तमानकाल, (3) भविष्यकाल. These three times are three legs.

द्वे शीर्षे : - (1) गणित ज्योतिष, (2) फलित ज्योतिष. These two major divisions of ज्योतिष are the two heads.

सप्त हस्तासो : - (1) सूर्य, (2) चन्द्रमा, (3) मंगल, (4) बुध, (5) गुरु, (6) शुक्र, (7) शनि. These seven planets are the hands. Rahu and Ketu are shadow planets so they are not planets like these seven planets.

त्रिधा बद्धो : - (1) लग्न, (2) चन्द्रलग्न, (3) सूर्यलग्न. These are the three places where it is bounded.

रोरवीति : - Shouting while fulfilling the desires. It is the moment of first cry of a newly born fulfilling the desires of person. This time is recorded for the casting of horoscope.

महो देवो मर्त्या ग्वं २ आविवेश : - This signifies that at this moment there is entrance eternal light in mortal to make the newly born alive and keep him alive. The solar light through breathing enters into his body first time.
